The retroGLAZE® process: Aluminium Retrofit Double Glazing.

Our retroGLAZE® Aluminium Retrofit Double Glazing solution is the right choice for upgrading existing aluminium windows and doors.  The process involves removing the existing poor-performing 3mm-4mm single glass and upgrading it to genuine high-performing double glazing.   Genuine double glazing includes two pieces of glass with a space between them, therefore a new profile is fitted to your existing frames to increase the amount of space available for the double glazing to sit.

Once installed, the changes are almost unnoticeable, leaving you with windows and doors that look like new joinery and provide you with a warmer and drier home.

Aluminium Retrofit Double Glazing: Explained.

Removal of Existing Glass

Existing glass (usually poor performing 3mm – 4mm single pane glass) is removed, to be replaced with traditional float or high-performing Low-E double glazing.
The glass in your double glazing is selected to achieve the requirements for you and your home.
Choose from the SuperTherm™ Low E double glazing range for superior home comfort.

Aluminium Profiles

The old, existing aluminium single glazing profiles are removed (these can be identified by an angled beads/ aluminium sections at an angle), and replaced with new double glazing profiles that finish flush on the outside. This gives your home a more modern appearance. The new flush aluminium profiles increases the space available so that genuine double glazing can now fit in your existing aluminium frames.

Hardware and Seals

The old aluminium window stays are replaced with new stays designed to function effectively with the weight of your new double glazing.  Rubber gasket seals are replaced as a part of the process, ensuring that your opening windows seal effectively.
You can choose to enhance the look of your windows with new colour-matched hardware (e.g. window catches, door handles and security stays) to provide improved security and modern joinery aesthetics.

Window Layout

Take the opportunity to change the layout of your windows by removing bulky vision rails to improve your view. Discuss options available to change fixed window to an opening window (or visa versa) to optimise air-flow in your home and improve passive ventilation.

Adaptors

Many hinged, and most sliding doors are pocket glazed (do not have removable beads around the glass), making it a little trickier to fit genuine double glazing into these frames.
In these situations we can use adaptors to increase the available space in the frame so it can hold a double glazing unit.  Flanges on the adaptor sit in the pocket where the original single glazing sat, and the remainder of the adaptor extends from the existing frame.  This reduces the viewing space by 20mm on all sides where the adaptor is used.  This reduction in viewing space should be considered when deciding between retrofitting or fully replacing the existing door.

Replacement Sliding Doors

Sliding doors are usually pocket glazed, meaning that we are unable to replace the existing sloped single glazing bead with a flat double glazing bead.
retroGLAZE® have two replacement sliding door options to make upgrading your sliding door to double glazing a breeze.
We will assemble the new sliding door panel in our factory, then all that is left to do on site is to take out your existing sliding door and install the new sliding door, and make any small modifications necessary.
We can include a vision rail if required and we replace existing rollers to ensure smooth functionality for years to come.

From there, all that is left for you to do is enjoy the improved comfort of your new Aluminium Retrofit Double Glazing.

Don't let the cold and noise from outside, ruin your rest inside.

You should be comfortable in your own home.

Talk to us

It’s cold, wet and noisy outside. It shouldn’t be like that inside too.

But this is the reality of life without double glazing. You might relate:

  • Birdsong is great, but not 3 hours before your alarm is set to go off. If only you could reduce the volume in your bedroom.
  • Winter has hit and so have the puddles. You have enough to do in the morning without having to dry the water off your window sills.
  • The view from your living area is out of this world, but it's partially blocked by an unsightly vision rail or dated colonial bars.
  • Inside your home is as cold as the winter chill outside and you're tired of living under blankets for 6 months of the year.
  • Your window hardware has deteriorated and the catches are barely holding on.  Tomorrow may be the day they finally give up
  • The sliding door has more bunny hops than your first time driving a manual car.  It feels like the whole door is about to come out of the track.

Window wisdom.

For the most part, aluminium window and door frames can be retrofitted.  Some joinery from the 60’s and 70’s may prove to be too flimsy, and some joinery may not have enough space or structural strength to hold the additional weight of genuine double glazing units.  read more here

Deciding whether to retrofit or replace your windows and doors can feel confusing, draining, or even overwhelming.

Retrofit double glazing uses your existing aluminium frames, replacing the old single glazing with new double glazing, whereas replacement double glazing involves removing both the existing glass and frames of your aluminium or timber windows and doors, replacing them with thermally enhanced joinery.  Read more here…

Have you heard this term so many times but you still have no idea what retrofit double glazing actually is?  Let us help!

Retrofit double glazing is the process of retrospectively fitting new energy-efficient double glazing into existing window frames that previously held single-pane glazing.  Read more here…

Changes to Clause H1 in the NZ Building Code require homes to achieve a minimum energy performance.  WEERS, or the Window Energy Efficiency Rating System, enables you to accurately assess the energy efficiency of the windows or glazed doors you choose.  Visit the WGANZ site or read more here…
